dull skinEven after using all those costly cosmetics and following the tips which your friendly neighbourhood beautician gives you, do you end up with dull-looking skin? Here are some practical tips that really work!

Tips to reduce skin dullness

Hydrate: First things first, hydrate yourself and your skin. Make sure you drink ample amounts of water as it clears out toxins from it. Also, using moisturising products will help in its upkeep which will make sure that it does not dry out or look dull.

Breathe: Yes, a simple way to get more oxygen into your system and also the glow back is to breathe. If you think you breathe all the time and your skin is still dull, you may want to try breathing exercises like pranayam, anulom vilom, etc.

Cleanse: Make it a point to cleanse your skin in the morning and night to remove make-up, dust and any other impurities from it. Also, go for regular clean-ups which involves a massage and a pack and will improve blood circulation to the skin.

Eat healthy: Making a few dietary changes such as reducing the consumption of oily, junk food and drinking less and quitting smoking will go a long way in clearing the dullness.

Exercise: Exercising helps in better blood circulation and getting good oxygen in your body. When you work out, you also sweat which releases toxins and all these combined efforts leads to a glow in your skin.

Beauty treatments: Certain beauty treatments can bring back the lost sheen in your skin. These include dermarollers, skin peels, etc. It is a good idea to get your skin analysed by a professional before you opt for any of these to select the one best-suited for your skin.

Home remedies: If you do not want to shell out a lot of money, you can opt for face packs made using home remedies like fruits and vegetables to bring the glow back and reduce dullness. Watch this space for home remedies for dull skin.

Are these 5 reasons making your skin look dull?

dull skin reasonsDo you ever look into the mirror and feel your skin looks tired and dull even after you’ve put on your make-up and had your beauty sleep? This is because there are several other factors which come into play to bring a glow in your skin. The basic principle is that your skin isn’t receiving enough oxygen and blood which is making it look dull and weary. Some of the reasons which may lead to this are:

Dust and pollution: Your daily commute from home to office and back does not spare your skin. The dust settles on the skin giving it a dull appearance. Combined with a bas skincare regimen, this dust can hamper your appearance in the long run.

Sun exposure: The killing heat combined with harmful UV rays can not only give you a bad tan but also make the skin look dull. This is because the sun takes away the moisture from your skin, making it rough and wrinkly. Constant undue exposure will make your skin dull and also amplify the ageing process.

Improper diet: Your skin reflects what you eat and if it does not get good nutrition, it will appear dull. To top it all, smoking and drinking alcohol further steal its glow. Had a binge night over the weekend? You will notice its effects immediately on your skin.

Improper cleansing: If you do not use the right products or do not make an attempt to regularly cleanse your skin of all the dust, grime and pollution, you will end up with dull skin and perhaps other beauty issues such as pimples, scars, etc.

Long office hours: Yes, your work can hamper your skin. Firstly, most offices involve people sitting indoors in the AC which can result in your skin not getting fresh, natural air. Secondly, the piling work, meetings, deadlines, etc can place a lot of stress which again doesn’t let your skin get the required rejuvenation time resulting in a dull appearance.

Dull skin can often look lifeless and make your skin look tired and old. Glowing skin will always be more pleasing to the eye and is also a sign of healthy skin. In order to reduce this dullness, make use of these simple home remedies. Also read these 5 causes that lead to dull skin. Honey and sugar scrub The first step to getting rid of dullness from your face is by removing the layer of dead skin cells by exfoliation.   Tamarind pulp Another way to get rid of dead skin cell is by rubbing the pulp of tamarind on your face. It has antioxidants, fibre, vitamin B and C, etc. which help give an inner glow to your skin by removing the impurities. Here's how to make tamarind or imli packs for hair and skin. Lemon mask Your skin also looks dull when it has a tan on it. Undue sun exposure can leave its mark on your skin as tanning and in order to get rid of it, make use of lemons.
  • All you have to do is squeeze the juice out of one and apply it on your face, avoiding the areas around the eyes.
  • Let it stay for 15 minutes and then wash it off with water.
  • Lemon juice has bleaching properties which will help remove the tan effectively. Also try these other lemon masks.
  • If your skin feels too dry after this pack, add some moisturising agent like honey or curd to the mixture. Here are three hydrating face masks you can make at home.
Malai mix After you remove the layer of tan, your skin will feel fresher and lighter but to brighten it further, make a mix of malai or milk cream, haldi or turmeric and besan or gram flour. Also try these home remedies for combination skin.  Peach and tomato pack For the final touch, make a face pack using the mash of a peach and tomato. The antioxidants, vitamins and minerals will not only bring out a natural, healthy glow but also make your skin look tighter and plumper. Beauty Tip #31: Use tamarind pulp to get glowing skin

tamarind pulpDull skin is such a mood dampener when it comes to skincare. Even if your skin is clear, unless it is glowing and radiant, it makes you look tired and older than your age. Due to pollution, stress and bad lifestyle habits such as less sleep, smoking, drinking, and sitting in an air-conditioned environment for long hours, the skin loses its sheen and starts to look dull.

If you too have this problem, you can find the solution to it right in your kitchen cabinet. The pulp of tamarind is useful in bringing back your skin's lost glow. All you have to do is soak it in water for some time and mash it if required to get a gooey, paste-like consistency. Next, apply this on your face carefully avoiding the area around the eyes. Let it stay for a few minutes and then wash your face with water. Tamarind's pulp has antioxidants and vitamin B and C which will remove dead skin cells and other impurities in your skin and leave it feeling soft and glowing.

During winter, nearly everyone suffers from dull and dry skin. Luckily, there are ways to keep this under control. Read below for some quick tips on keeping dry skin at bay. Modify your skincare routine It is very easy to continue your summer skin routine for winter too, unfortunately, this will just worsen skin’s dryness. For soft gorgeous skin, you will have to modify everything from your face wash to your toner, specifically for this season. Tip #1: Pick the right face wash: Avoid a foaming wash during the dry weather. Foam usually means the presence of sulphate detergents which are known to cause and worsen dry skin. Look for gentle cleansing lotions, creams or oils with soothing properties for best results advises Dr Kiran. Tip #2: Change your moisturiser: In winters, skin needs an extra dose of moisture. Says Dr Kiran, 'Most people continue using gels or lotions from the summer and find that their skin still feels tight and dry after using them. Instead, look for a rich moisturising cream that will make your skin feel moist and supple, and use it as often as you need to.' Tip #3: Don't forget to apply sunscreen: Just because it is winter doesn't mean you can stop applying sunscreen. 'The sun contains UVA and UVB rays which reduce the moisture in the skin causing it to become drier. So look for a sunscreen with SPF 30 or above with at least a PA++ rating,' advises Dr Kiran. (Read: Home remedies for winter skincare) Get the right treatment Make sure you see your dermatologist who can prescribe you any medications or treatments you may need to get your skin moist and glowing. Tip #4: Red RX Facial: Says Dr. Kiran, 'Some clinics provide a Red RX Facial designed to naturally get skin looking moist and supple in just 40 minutes with long-lasting results. Using mesoinfusions of hyaluronic acid, an ultra-advanced biosaccharide mask and natural collagen boosting and soothing LED light, the Red Rx usually soothes dry skin woes. Make sure the clinics are using professional-grade products for best results.' Know how to get rid of common skincare problems during the cold weather, here. The magic  of home remedies Home remedies can also come in handy if you know how and what to use. Here's what you can do. Tip #5: Night face mask:  If you want to add more glow to your skin this winter, try this face pack recommended by Blossom Kochhar. Before going to bed, mix a tbsp of milk cream or malai and add a few drops of castor oil, rose water and glycerine to it. Now apply this on your face, and if extra, massage on your neck and hands as well. Leave it to dry overnight. Wash it with cold water in the morning. Tip #6: Lip care: Lips tend to get extremely dry in winter. If you do not want to apply the lip balm available to buy, you can make one yourself at home using natural ingredients such as lemon, honey, petroleum jelly and more. Here are 4 types of lip balms you can make. Fix your diet Your diet plays an important role in your skin's moisture levels. Here are a few ways you can keep your skin supple. Tip #7: Drink enough water: Winter is the time when we fail to consume enough water as we do not feel thirsty. 'Proper hydration will ensure that enough moisture and nutrients are delivered to your skin. This means drinking around 8 glasses of water is a must,' says Dr Kiran Lohia, a US-trained MD specialising in dermatology. If you still can't get yourself to drink enough water, here are 7 ways to boost your water intake. Tip #8: Up your omega-3 fatty acids intake: According to Dr. Kiran, you are what you eat! One important nutrient is omega-3 fatty acids, which are naturally present in your skin’s external barrier layer. This lipid helps keep the skin intact, preventing important nutrients and water from leaving. Foods that contain this important ingredient include walnuts, salmon and flaxseed. Alter your lifestyle Simple changes in your lifestyle will help improve your skin significantly. Tip #9: Exercise regularly: 'One important component to add to your routine is regular exercise. Not only will exercise help you reduce your stress, it will also increase blood flow to the skin, allowing more nutrients to be delivered,' she says.  Here are some useful skincare tips to keep your skin healthy. Tip #10: Go easy on alcoholic drinks: Alcohol can dehydrate your skin and make it look puffy and dry the next day. With lack of moisture and dryness, your skin can look very wrinkly and dull. Therefore, restrict your alcohol intake and make sure you hydrate yourself well to avoid its ill-effects to show up on your face. Photo source: Getty images

Curry leaves or kadi patta is a strong ingredient that adds a delicious, spicy flavour to most of our Indian dishes. We all know that this ingredient comes with effective properties for our health, but it has host of beauty benefits too. Curry leaves are anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory in nature and possess moisturising properties as well. Such properties help in resolving common skin problems, when used with other complementing ingredients, in an instant. Here are some face packs you could use for blemish-free, glowing skin with curry leaves. Curry leaves with turmeric for acne Most of us wake up with acne problems every other day. Instead of reaching out for chemical or oil-based creams, head straight to your kitchen. Curry leaves or kadi patta and turmeric - usually the ingredients to go into our curries and dals, can work wonders on your skin too. Turmeric takes care of excessive scars and inflammation and controls oil secretion by sebaceous glands as well. A fine paste with curry leaves and turmeric can cleanse out all the dirt and acne, if and when used regularly. Here are some beauty benefits of turmeric. Steps: Curry leaves with multani mitti for wrinkle-free, glowing skin The market is surely flooded with anti-ageing creams, but a safer and effective way to free your skin from signs of ageing are home remedies with curry leaves. Multani mitti or fuller’s earth with curry leaves are effective enough to smoothen out fine lines and revitalise dull looking skin. Curry leaves fight off free radicals in the skin and contribute in keeping the skin’s texture healthy and firm, multani mitti purifies it, absorbs excess oil and works on healing the skin. Taking these two ingredients with rose water, which is a natural astringent and helps tackle sagging skin and puffiness, makes for an easy face pack for a younger looking skin. Steps:
  • Mix some grounded curry leaf powder, fuller’s earth or multani mitti and add a few drops of rose water.
  • Apply this all over the face; be cautious of applying the paste too close to the eyes.
  • Wait till it dries off. Once done, wash well.
Curry leaves with milk for skin burns, cuts and rashes Just as summer seeps in, the skin suffers from heat boils, rashes and sun burns. Applying some curry leaves with milk for this, could leave your skin relieved. Milk is known to heal and control allergic skin reactions, and calms red spots and rashes with ease. Try these remedies for itchy skin.  Steps:
  • Put in some curry leaves and boil them with milk for a few minutes.
  • Let this cool off, and then apply it gently onto the affected area.

Product review: Vichy Ideal White Meta Whitening Sleeping Mask

Repeated facials of all possible kinds did no good to my ageing skin. I bought my acne under control with the La Roche Posay Effaclar foaming gel but the glow was missing. One look and anyone could gauge that I don’t care for my skin even though I do. I definitely needed a product that could work a little better than the expensive facials. I guess the wait is over as I now have the Vichy Ideal White Meta Whitening Sleeping Mask. Sounds like a clichéd and sales-y line? Believe me, it is not. Here are some tips on selecting the right facial for your skin. My experience with the Vichy Ideal White Meta Whitening Sleeping Mask The packaging is modern and the product comes in a heavy bottle. The lid even has a mirror which is a nice touch. The container is made of glass so you’ll have to be extra careful in handling it. The good quality glass explains why it is so heavy. All-in-all it looks great when placed on my dressing table. Back to the product. It is a gel mask that is not sticky but not very light either. The light pink colour with soft white beads and a mild fragrance adds to its appeal. It is a night cream/gel or a sleeping mask. But for the past one month, I was at home so I decided to use it during the day. You can either apply it as a thin layer and massage it gently on your skin every day or apply a thick layer 2-3 times a week and allow it to absorb. I prefer the former as the thick layer feels too heavy during summers. Read: Summer skincare tips you must not miss. My review of the Vichy Ideal White Meta Whitening Sleeping Mask The thin layer of product seeps in your skin and doesn’t need to be washed off. That is a convenient feature of this mask. My skin felt hydrated and fresh right from the first day. I used it once a day for a week and I got more compliments than I get after a facial. My skin definitely had a remarkable glow. Like most Vichy products, this one is paraben free too. Find out the causes of dull skin here. The only drawback for some could be its cost. The 75ml container costs Rs2350. But don’t be fooled and assume 75ml means it’s a tiny container. This mask can last you for almost 2 and half months and if you use it 2-3 times a week it’ll last you a lot more. For the glow and fairness, this is definitely a good price to pay. The product is made for oily and sensitive skin and works perfectly fine for normal skin too. So what are you waiting for? Want to get rid of dull and tired skin, try this product now. You can also try these home remedies for dull skin. • Objects that damage your skin

So you thought only exposing yourself to the sun can wreck havoc on your skin? Think, again as some things you use could be the culprit of all that acne and blackheads. Don’t trust us? Hear it out from dermatologist Dr Sejal Shah about the objects that are probably damaging your skin.

  • Your pillowcase

Your pillowcase: The oils and toxins you on your skin stay on your pillowcase which makes you get up with a breakout the next morning. You can prevent the damage by washing your pillowcase twice a week and cleaning your face before bed.

  • Your phone

Your phone: Your phone is covered with bacteria, and it is that one object you press to your face so automatically, you can get a lot of breakouts on your cheeks. So make sure that you clean your skin or use your headphones while taking a call.

  • Your aftershave

Your aftershave: Yes the aftershave smells good, but the alcohol in it can dry out your skin. If your skin is oily, using some moisturising and hydrating toners after shaving can help.

  • Your sunglass

Your sunglasses: You probably keep your sunglass on top of your head or your backpack. When you put them on, the dirt on the sunglass blocks the pores of your nose which are a perfect recipe for blackheads and pimples. Clean your sunglasses often to protect your skin.

  • Your helmet

Your helmet: The constant rubbing of the strap on the skin can lead to acne. In fact, the friction can spread the oil and sweat from one place of the face to the other. So, make sure that you clean your helmets frequently and also wear the one that fits well.

  • Your exfoliating scrub

Exfoliating scrub: Over scrubbing your skin can lead to crack and tears in the outer layers of your skin. This may, in turn, cause dry skin and inflammation. Scrubbing once a week can be enough to prevent the build-up of dirt and oil on your skin.

Skin cancer risk can be reduced by weight loss surgery, says study

Bariatric surgery, a weight loss operation, is associated with a 61 per cent decrease in the risk of developing malignant skin cancer, according to a study.

Melanoma is a deadly form of skin cancer, most closely associated with excessive sun exposure. Obesity is an established risk factor for cancer and some studies indicate that intentional weight loss sometimes reduces the risk.

However, evidence for a link between obesity, weight loss and malignant melanoma is limited.

The new findings showed that bariatric surgery led to a 42 per cent reduced risk of skin cancer in general compared to controls given usual obesity care.

The study “supports the idea that obesity is a melanoma risk factor and indicates that weight loss in individuals with obesity can reduce the risk of bariatric surgery that has increased steadily in many countries over several decades”, said lead author Magdalena Taube from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

The results were presented at the 2018 European Congress on Obesity in Vienna, Austria.

The protective effect of bariatric surgery on skin cancer was observed in a group of 2,007 obese participants who were then followed for a median of 18 years.

These were compared with a control group consisting of 2,040 individuals who matched with the participants who underwent surgery on sex, age, anthropometric measurements, cardiovascular risk factors, psychosocial variables and personality traits.

To analyse malignant melanoma incidence, statistical tests were used to compare time to first melanoma cancer diagnosis between the surgery and control groups.

In additional analyses, risk ratios between the surgery and control groups were compared.

Aging associated with wrinkles and hair loss reversed

$

In a mouse model developed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Keshav Singh, Ph.D., and colleagues found when a change leading to mitochondrial dysfunction is induced; the mouse develops wrinkled skin and extensive, visible hair loss in a matter of weeks.

When the mitochondrial function is restored by turning off the gene responsible for mitochondrial dysfunction, the mouse returns to smooth skin and thick fur, indistinguishable from a healthy mouse of the same age.

Importantly, the mutation that triggers this is in a nuclear gene affecting mitochondrial function, the tiny organelles known as the powerhouses of the cells.

In humans, a decline in mitochondrial function is seen during aging, and mitochondrial dysfunction can drive age-related diseases.

A depletion of the DNA in mitochondria is also implicated in human mitochondrial diseases, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, age-associated neurological disorders, and cancer.

The mutation in the mouse model is induced when the antibiotic doxycycline is added to the food or drinking water. This causes depletion of mitochondrial DNA because the enzyme to replicate the DNA becomes inactive.

In four weeks, the mice showed gray hair, reduced hair density, hair loss, slowed movements and lethargy, changes that are reminiscent of natural aging.

Dramatically, this hair loss and wrinkled skin could be reversed by turning off the mutation.

Little change was seen in other organs when the mutation was induced, suggesting an important role for mitochondria in skin compared to other tissues.

The wrinkled skin showed changes similar to those seen in both intrinsic and extrinsic aging — intrinsic aging is the natural process of aging, and extrinsic aging is the effect of external factors that influence aging, such as skin wrinkles that develop from excess sun or long-term smoking.

Reversal of the mutation restored mitochondrial function, as well as the skin and hair pathology. This showed that mitochondria are reversible regulators of skin aging and loss of hair, an observation that Singh calls “surprising.”
